Located within Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest, the Discovery Center grounds have a multitude of opportunities for the outdoor enthusiast. Our campus also features many self-guided exploration possibilities for individuals and families to enjoy.
From biking and hiking to snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, our 12-mile trail system is open for all to enjoy year-round from dawn to dusk. The terrain is gentle and winds through the woods, along the lake, bog and nearby Manitowish River, allowing you to explore a variety of habitats, each with their own unique plants and animals to encounter. While you’re out exploring our trails, keep your eyes out for our Birding Trail Signs to learn about unique bird species you may spot on our trails. If you’re visiting our trails during winter, we recommend you review our trail conditions.
Although our trails are pet-friendly, we do ask that you keep your pets leashed for safety. Please be advised that during hunting season, our trails may be frequented by hunters so please wear blaze orange/high visibility clothing for your own safety. Please visit the
Wisconsin DNR’s site for current hunting season dates.
Explore our
Nature Center where you can meet our animal ambassadors, enjoy wildlife exhibits, artifacts, and more. Meander through our interpretive gardens located across the property, including our Discovery Garden featuring a pizza garden, edible flower garden, and vegetable garden. Near Discovery Hall enjoy our rain gardens and Shoreline Restoration Garden at Statehouse lakeshore.
Bring the kids to play in our Nature Playscape, our nature-inspired playground, open from dawn to dusk year-round. While you are playing at the Nature Playscape, consider taking a walk down the StoryWalk Trail to read the latest StoryWalk book, or join us for our year-round monthly StoryWalk program intended for ages 4-7 years-old. Visit our
program calendar to find out when our next StoryWalk program is scheduled.
