RECREATION and Exploration

Located within Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest, the Discovery Center grounds have a multitude of opportunities for the outdoor enthusiast.  Our campus also features many self-guided exploration possibilities for individuals and families to enjoy.

outdoor recreation opportunities

From biking and hiking to snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, our 12-mile trail system is open for all to enjoy year-round from dawn to dusk. The terrain is gentle and winds through the woods, along the lake, bog and nearby Manitowish River, allowing you to explore a variety of habitats, each with their own unique plants and animals to encounter. While you’re out exploring our trails, keep your eyes out for our Birding Trail Signs to learn about unique bird species you may spot on our trails. If you’re visiting our trails during winter, we recommend you review our trail conditions.

Although our trails are pet-friendly, we do ask that you keep your pets leashed for safety. Please be advised that during hunting season, our trails may be frequented by hunters so please wear blaze orange/high visibility clothing for your own safety. Please visit the Wisconsin DNR’s site for current hunting season dates.
