Citizen Science
Citizen science is scientific research where nonprofessional, volunteer scientists collect data. Citizen science not only contributes to significant research projects all around the state, but also has the great benefit of building a sense of stewardship between people and the environment. Citizen scientists increase professional scientists’ abilities to cover broad geographical areas in a shorter amount of time, therefore creating more meaningful datasets.
At the Discovery Center, we train people of all ages and abilities to conduct scientific research. You can learn to experience the world in new ways, explore new areas of the Northwoods, and even learn more about your own backyard.
Some of the projects Citizen Scientists are working on include:
Wildlife
- Acoustic Bat Monitoring
- Monarch Tagging
- Frog and Toad Surveys
Lakes
Monitoring Environmental Change
Birds
- Annual Crane Count Coordination for Vilas County
- Wisconsin Breeding Bird Atlas Coordination for Vilas County
- Christmas Bird Count
